The Beginning
How did you become a bodybuilder?
That seems to be the most common question. In actuality, I had no
intentions of becoming a bodybuilder nor did I even think about
it.
I was born in a small town, St. Simons Island, GA. “Small
town” is to say the least. Growing up, dance was my life.
At age 3, I started dance and continued for the next 23 years. During
my high school years, I played soccer. Great sport and if you’ve
never played, you won’t appreciate it as much. I was the first
female in the county to ever receive a scholarship for soccer. In
addition, I also received a scholarship for dance. After many years
of intense dance training, I had the opportunity to perform at Busch
Gardens, Tampa, Disney, Orlando, and many various performances across
the US. Eventually I ended up back in my hometown to teach at the
dance studio where I began. As a dance instructor you don’t
work many hours so I got a second job to keep me out of trouble.
That’s when I entered the fitness industry working at a local
gym.
At that point, I wanted to learn everything there was to know
about the gym/fitness business. That led me to a few workouts. I
figured that if I was to pursue the gym business, I atleast needed
to know how to workout. One thing led to another and I was lifting
heavy weights and skipping happy hour to head to the gym. One of
the trainers suggested that I compete in a local bodybuilding show.
My first reaction was to laugh and ignore the ridiculous comment.
At that point I had never heard of such an event nor had I attended
one.
To make a long story short, I went to my first show. I was
surprised at the level of competitors in comparison to myself as
they definitely didn’t compare to what I had seen on TV. At
that point, I figured “Why not”? I have nothing to lose,
I’ll just send in my entry fee (so I can’t back out)
and I’ll compete out of town so if I do make an idiot of myself,
nobody would know. Those of you who have competed, you’ll
agree that it’s addicting. From that point I was hooked. I
placed second in my first show. I had such a great time, received
an awesome response from the spectators, and decided second wasn’t
good enough so I’ll do the same show next year. Needless to
say, I won first in heavyweight and the overall. Next thing I know,
I’m on stage at the 2005 Jr. Nationals and placed top five. WOW!!! I didn’t see that coming.
